Away vs. Peninsula Typhoons

Gorge Canadians take first game of the season with a 2-0 win vs. Peninsula Typhoons
A fantastic soccer weather day for the first game of the season. The Gorge(eous) U11 girls travelled to Sydney's Rotary Park for a game aginst the Peninsula Typhoon ... always a strong club. Luckily we found the field (note to self ... update map with directions for parents)!!

This was our first game of the season playing with our newly created team of 8 returning players and 6 new players. This, combined with the small number of practises, the fact we are still learning each others names and the introduction of a mid-field (first year playing 8v8) would ensure things would be a bit confusing at the start.

Coaches Brad & Mafalda decided on a 2-3-2 (d-m-f), hoping we would not just be playing a defensive match. From the first kick-off this seemed to be a good choice as Jaymie C. (playing centre-mid) took the ball through the Typhoons side and fired a fairly strong left-footed shot on goal. A good sign!

The match was very even with Gorge carrying the match approx. 60/40 in the Typhoons end. Tallies came from Joslyn D. (on a tenacious dribbling run and shot to the near post) and Erin H. (using her "patented" long shot catching the keeper off-guard). All girls played a good game ... each one having a memorable moment.

Agreed by all ... the difference in the match was the outstanding goalkeeping of Paige W.
Way to go Paige!!!

Welcome to Soccer Season 2005/6!

Welcome to the 2005/6 Season!
This year the U11 Girls move up to the Super-8 category of soccer (8 per side). This means we carry more players per team and play on a slightly large field. We also start to play a modified offside rule ... specifically, the girls can be offside (normal rules) only in the defenders 1/2 of the field (vs 1/2 the field). This will help the girls transition into the full-field game starting in U-13.

What are the goal of the coaches (Brad and Mafalda) this year??
- technique and skills
- skills and techniques
- some agility and fiteness training
- skills
- techniques
- position of play (i.e. where positions should be playing in a game)
- some tactics
- and of course some FUN!!
Did I mention skills and techniques? :-)

Why are we still working on the basic skills and technique? Because without technique there can be no tactics. (I stole that quote from a great English coach). What this means is that if the girls do not have the basic skills (dribbling, passing/receiving and shooting) then we would be wasting our time teaching them about tactical play.

Go Gorge!
