This Week's Gorge Academy with Guest Coach Danny Van.

This weeks Gorge Academy had Coach Danny Van Gylswyk subbing in for coaches Jamie and Deano. With some support from U11 Girls Coach Mike Carr and yours truly.

It was a clinic dedicated to developing individual skills for the girls ... namely ball control. With a good warm-up session provided by Coach Danny, the girls got many touches on the ball. It was a good clinic for Coach Brad and Mike also, who will probably impliment the warm-up into every practise. The clinic also had a good passing/shooting drill and closed with a full field scrimmage.

Thanks Danny!

Away vs Gordon Head B

Gorge Canadians Chalk up a 1-0 Win vs. Gordon Head "B" in a Tight Match

Well another great day to play soccer ... a little cool for the fans on the sidelines, but good weather for the girls. We travelled to Lambrick Park to play another of the Gordon Head teams. The Gordon Head B team was not as strong as the Gordon Head A team last week but we still had a very good, close game. Could it be we missed Olivia M. on defence and Katlyn H. at mid/forward?

Play was roughly equal with Gorge carrying the play 60/40. However, I would say Gordon Head had more quality shots on net (we will work on this at practise this week). I think this is because we are still not passing enough, the girls want to try to do it themselves and subsequently loose the ball. Also, in our zeal to score goals the midefielder were playing too much like forwards and we left our midfield wide open ... allowing Gordon Head to attack.

Some stand out plays today were ...

  • Paige's shut-out goaltending, with one spectacular first half diving save on a hard, low drive. Way to go Paige!
  • Cara's first half goal, a nice hard shot from just outside the penalty area that the keeper could not handle. Good shot Cara!
  • Joslyn's tenacity when carrying the ball and taking on an attacker ... she is very hard to get the ball from. She's a pit bull!
  • Kaitlin M's agressive play today both attacking and defending. Another pit bull ... I think Kaitlin won all her battles today.
  • Lauren's tough play in close quarters with their good (and large) players. The skills are improving Lauren!
  • Some very nice passing (give and go's) between Alanna & Jaymie and Alanna & Jennifer - these girls are starting to know each other and communicate on the field. Good play making Alanna ... these girl's will be a force this season.
  • Erin's long shot from defence that caught the Gordon Head keeper off guard and nearly trickled in. Good defensive play Erin. Shooting from anywhere is a good thing!
  • From Heather ... a very hard tackle in Gordon Head's end to steal the ball and get a shot away on the Gordon Head net. Good play Heather.
  • Indy and Taylor continue to improve on both their position on the field and their movement on the ball. Keep it up girls.

And on the lighter side ...

  • Jennifer sneaking in three successive shifts in the first half and Alanna sneaking in 4! :-)
  • Paige's loss of focus almost allowing a goal (watching people behind her).
  • Lauren bowling over a Gordon Head player with a great hockey body check.
  • Lauren and Erin's sibling fighting spilling onto the field (note to self ... keep them seperated :-) )

Good game girls! I think we can thank Paige for this win!

Home vs Gordon Head A

Gordon Head A Hand the Gorge Canadians their First Loss ... 3-0

Today's game was our first game played on the new turf field ... I think the girls enjoyed the turf and our visitors also had some compliments on the playing surface. Thanks to Gordon Head, Gorge and our parents for following our turf rules. The game was played under clear skys ... another great weather day for soccer.

Gordon Head A has been our most difficult competion todate in this young season and handed us our first defeat of the season ... a 3-0 loss. I personnaly don't think we played as bad as the score indicates. I think we carried an equal amount of the play, we had a number of shots/chances ... Gordon Head just capitalized on their shots. They also had one very skilled player that capitalized on what I would say was a coaching error on my part (my fault).

Perhaps the girls were stymied by Gordon Head's very good defensive system and the way in which their players stuck to it. They played a sweeper on defence who did a good job on clearing the balls away from the middle of their penalty zone out to the sidelines where their midfielders pushed the ball further up the field.

We did have some bright moments...

  • Olivia playing defence, continued to play intelligenty taking the ball to the sidelines away from the middle and not "playing" with the ball in the middle zone
  • I heard the girls communicating/talking out on the field (specifically Jennifer, Jaymie and Alanna)
  • Indy and Taylor played by far their best games each getting some chances to move the ball around in the opponents end and taking shots
  • Kaitlin M. played a good agressive game attacking and defending
  • Lauren H. played a very good agressive game not allowing their larger girls to push us around
  • Erin playing forward for the first shift penetrated their midfield for a couple of shots although somewhat far out and one missing the net
  • There was some good physical play with some very good use of the shoulders (vs hands and elbows) ... although this can always use some more work

So chin up ladies! A goal for the end of the season ... lets hope we meet them again and get a chance to show that we are better than the score indicated!

Home vs. Gorge Royals

Gorge Canadians & Gorge Royals Battle to a 1-1 tie.

It's always fun playing games against our own Gorge Teams as the team are fairly evenly matched and the girls from the Gorge teams now know each other. This creates easy-going, good-natured competitive matchs. We have been playing against Coach Mike Carr's team now for four years and the two sides have always been fairly even. The Royals have lost one of their top players from last year to a U12 Gold team this year, so there was hope that the Royals veterans filled that gap and picked up a couple of other players that would assist. It looks like that has happened. For today's match, our squad as not at full strength (we were missing some quality players in Erin, Lauren and Joslyn).

A fantastic day for soccer at Bullen Park today ... sunny, slightly cool and no wind.

We again stuck with our 2-3-2 (d-m-f) formation. The games was fairly evenly matched with most of the play in the first half of the game in the Royal's end. This was due to had work in the mid-field and good defensive play by Olivia M. and Heather T. Kaitlyn M. opened the scoring by executing a fast, aggressive run from our end of the field through the Royals side and ended the run with a hard low shot into the back of the net! Gooooooooooaaaaaaalllllllll!

A lot of excellent passing and play work by the mid-fields today ... Jaymie C., Jennifer C., Alanna B., Cara McF. and Katlyn H. One play left Indy G. standing in the front of the net alone with the ball ... but alas, the left footed shot from Indy would not get by the Royal's Keeper. Paige W. played goal for our side the first half and was not really challenged. Another shut-out half of soccer for Paige.

The second half Alanna B. went in the net. We definitely missed her playing as a mid-fielder, because the Royals started to penetrate our side and in the first 15 minutes of play the Royals were in our 1/4 of the field and Alanna B. had faced about a half-a-dozen quality shots - turning each one away. One brilliant save - tipping a hard shot on net over the net only to go off the cross-bar - left both sides fans in awe. The Royals pressed hard and were leaving our forwards (Taylor G., Cara McF and Indy G.) standing alone up at the half ... we'll get those clearing balls up to you soon girls. Ultimately, it was another very hard high shot that beat Alanna B. with a couple of minutes to play. We were not dis-hearted and we pressed very hard and had many good chances later in the game, but could not finish.

Great playing Alanna B. !!

The Big Reveal for the Player Profile of the Week - October 12, 2005 is ....
Jennifer C.

A little more difficult for your girls (parents) to guess. Only four (4) of the thirteen participating got it right. This week is another tough one!

As for last nights practise ... thanks for all parents / players for showing up. The new field was great to play on ... except for those little rubber particles that stick to everything! The field will eventually "settle".

Saturday October 8, 2005 - Gorge Turf Field Opening Ceremony!!

No Game Today ... Gorge Turf Field Opens!
Well there was no game today against Salt Spring because all Gorge Soccer Association teams were particiapating in the grand opening of their new turf field at Hampton Park!

This field has been in the works for over two years now and with persiverance, dedication , hard work and leadership (thanks Terry!) the field is now open, playable and will be available to all players of the Gorge Soccer Association. This field will do many things for the club, but mostly and simply put, will allow kids to play and enjoy soccer.

Thanks to Mike/Maureen from Gorge Royal U11-Girls Team (that's them in the burgundy colour) for the picture.

Home vs. Peninsula Sweet

Gorge Canadians tie Pennisula Sweet 0-0
The skys cleared up after a nights rain and the sun came out for another great soccer weather day for game #2. The Gorge Canadians U11 Girls hosted Peninsula Sweet and as I said last week the Peninsula teams are all fairly strong teams. Rudd Park was our field today ... nice field conditions but the mini goals are a little too small for the girls age group now. This would require some accurate finishing today for anyone to get a tally.

We stuck to our 2-3-2 (d-m-f) formation for now, which seems to be a good formation for our team's composition of players. The match was fairly even, although I would say the Gorge side had possession in Peninsula's end for 75% of the game. Peninsula had one full back that was very strong and continually shut down our attacks and breakaways. The girls showed off some of their improving skills at moving the ball around by passing the ball very well today. I even heard them talking to each other!!

Jennifer C., mostly playing centre-midfield, had an outstanding game continually attacking their forward movement and stifling their attacks. She also created some great transitioning play after that. Other notable efforts came from Alanna B. (playing under the weather) and Olivia M. on defence (continually taking away the centre of the field from them).

Paige W. played goal again the first half and Joslyn D. backed up the Gorge net in the second. Thanks for stepping in Joslyn ... you get to share the shutout!!

The dying seconds of the game, Gorge pushed hard for a goal having at least 5 or 6 shots [some even on goal :-) ] but we could not score. Excellent push girls ... that shooting accuracy will come soon! The importnat thing now is that you are shooting!

The team is starting to gel and passing and on field communications are improving!

Practise this week ... shooting/finishing.
