Away vs Gordon Head B

Gorge Canadians Chalk up a 1-0 Win vs. Gordon Head "B" in a Tight Match

Well another great day to play soccer ... a little cool for the fans on the sidelines, but good weather for the girls. We travelled to Lambrick Park to play another of the Gordon Head teams. The Gordon Head B team was not as strong as the Gordon Head A team last week but we still had a very good, close game. Could it be we missed Olivia M. on defence and Katlyn H. at mid/forward?

Play was roughly equal with Gorge carrying the play 60/40. However, I would say Gordon Head had more quality shots on net (we will work on this at practise this week). I think this is because we are still not passing enough, the girls want to try to do it themselves and subsequently loose the ball. Also, in our zeal to score goals the midefielder were playing too much like forwards and we left our midfield wide open ... allowing Gordon Head to attack.

Some stand out plays today were ...

  • Paige's shut-out goaltending, with one spectacular first half diving save on a hard, low drive. Way to go Paige!
  • Cara's first half goal, a nice hard shot from just outside the penalty area that the keeper could not handle. Good shot Cara!
  • Joslyn's tenacity when carrying the ball and taking on an attacker ... she is very hard to get the ball from. She's a pit bull!
  • Kaitlin M's agressive play today both attacking and defending. Another pit bull ... I think Kaitlin won all her battles today.
  • Lauren's tough play in close quarters with their good (and large) players. The skills are improving Lauren!
  • Some very nice passing (give and go's) between Alanna & Jaymie and Alanna & Jennifer - these girls are starting to know each other and communicate on the field. Good play making Alanna ... these girl's will be a force this season.
  • Erin's long shot from defence that caught the Gordon Head keeper off guard and nearly trickled in. Good defensive play Erin. Shooting from anywhere is a good thing!
  • From Heather ... a very hard tackle in Gordon Head's end to steal the ball and get a shot away on the Gordon Head net. Good play Heather.
  • Indy and Taylor continue to improve on both their position on the field and their movement on the ball. Keep it up girls.

And on the lighter side ...

  • Jennifer sneaking in three successive shifts in the first half and Alanna sneaking in 4! :-)
  • Paige's loss of focus almost allowing a goal (watching people behind her).
  • Lauren bowling over a Gordon Head player with a great hockey body check.
  • Lauren and Erin's sibling fighting spilling onto the field (note to self ... keep them seperated :-) )

Good game girls! I think we can thank Paige for this win!
